How to password protect a specific directory (POA)

Here are the step by step procedures to setup a user for the site and to protect a specific directory.

Log into the Customer Control Panel with your main account’s username password.

From the “Home” tab, click on the “Create User” link.
In “Display Name” type in the name (Example: “John Smith”) of the user you’re creating this for or “Upload” or “Private”
Under the “Login” section, before the @ symbol, type in the user you want to create, example: upload@yourdomain.com.
Type in a strong password or have the system generate one.
Select the box below under the “Assign Services” you want to give them access to for your domain.
You’ll select Authorized Web Access, and IIS Website Management” for your domain.
DO NOT CHECK the “WebMatrix” box at all!
Click “Next”
Under the “Website Selection” section you’ll see “Managed Website” from the drop down select “yourdomain.com”, click Next.
Under the “Add New Service User (Authorized Web Access) section, check the box for “yourdomain.com” and click Next.
Then click Finish.
Go back to the “Hosted Domains” tab and click the “yourdomain.com” domain.
Click on the “Security Settings” link.
Click the “Edit” button.
Check the “Anonymous access” box, then click Submit.
Click the “Hosted Domains” tab, then click on “yourdomian.com” again.
Click on the “File Manager” link.
Click on your “yourdomain.com” folder that you have your website content in.
Find the folder you created for file you want the people to download from, right click on the folder and click the “Get Info” button.
Under the Anonymous Users section, Uncheck all the boxes and click Save.
Go back to “Hosted Domains” tab, click on “YourDomain.com” again.
Click on the “Virtual Directories” link.
Click on “Add Virtual Directory” button.
Type in the name of the folder you created.
You can keep the Description blank
Directory type: type in name of the directory in the box after the wwwroot.
Example: If your directory is called upload, you would type in “yourdomain.com/upload”, click Next.
Uncheck the “Anonymous Access”.
Then check the “Directory Browsing” box.
(This is if you want people to see the content of the folder your browsing to after they login. If you don’t want them to see the individual files, then don’t check this box.)
Then click Finish
Then when you send the link to the folder, they will be prompted for their credentials and be able to view the pages or content you’ve uploaded to that folder.
